Teachers who understand their students' cultural backgrounds will be more effective, according to South Carolina State University Education Department Chair Dr. Evelyn Fields, who is helping educators create lesson plans that engage students of all backgrounds. African-American male students, according to research, are more likely to want to move around rather than sit static in the classroom, and Fields says that teachers who know about these small cultural differences can adapt and enhance the chances for academic success among all students.
