Il dramma dei lavoratori stagionali impiegati in agricoltura è al centro del rapporto di Medici senza frontiere (Msf), dall'emblematico titolo "Una stagione all' inferno" dedicato appunto al drammatico fenomeno dello sfruttamento di immigrati. Il rapporto si fonda su 600 interviste a migranti impegnati nella raccolta di prodotti agricoli in otto zone del sud Italia. Paghe da fame per tutti, in gran parte dei casi meno di 25 euro al giorno, e lavoro in nero per 9 lavoratori su 10, costretti poi anche ad accettare orari impossibili e reclutamenti quotidiani da 'caporali' ai quali va data parte del già magro salario. La Unión Europea está a punto de aprobar una directiva sobre expulsiones y retornos de inmigrantes sin papeles. Una directiva que varias organizaciones sociales han tildado de "directiva de la vergüenza". En ella se prevé, entre otras cosas, la posibilidad de detener a los migrantes sin papeles hasta 18 meses. Personas que no han cometido ningún delito y que sin embargo se ven privados ya en la actualidad de su libertad. Estas personas están detenidas en los centros de internamiento para extranjeros, auténticas cárceles cuyas condiciones han sido denunciadas por varias organizaciones sociales e incluso por un informe de la misma Unión Europea.

El miércoles 7 de mayo, en Bruselas, varios colectivos y ONG, han organizado una manifestación para protestar en contra de esta directiva de la vergüenza.

El Gobierno italiano aprobará un plan para expulsar a los extranjeros sin papeles. Para la reagrupación familiar, el parentesco deberá probarse con una prueba médica, lo que excluirá a los hijos adoptivos.

Según el borrador del plan, el sospechoso de haber cometido tal delito -es decir, ser inmigrante sin papeles- deberá ser procesado en un máximo de quince días y después expulsado de Italia. El nuevo Ejecutivo derechista de Silvio Berlusconi también proyecta reforzar los polémicos centros de permanencia temporal, en los que son recluidos los inmigrantes sin papeles hasta que se decida su destino, pero en los que no pueden estar más de dos meses. La idea es ampliar al plazo a 18 meses -límite temporal que, de hecho, la Unión Europea está estudiando- y crear nuevos centros. En la actualidad, hay once.
